What is the most appropriate way to correct a water quality problem?
How you choose to purify your water depends on the contaminants, if any, that are found in your water. There are numerous quality water treatment systems, including removing the source of contaminants, repairing or drilling a new well, connecting to a municipal or rural water supply, and installing a water treatment system. If your water is contaminated with chloroform bacteria, the problem needs to be corrected, or you need to use bottled water.
Immediately start boiling your water to disinfect it before drinking, while you are correcting the problem. Then there are several ways to correct this problem, including shock chlorination of the water system, repairing the well, and permanently removing the source of contaminants. However, if shock chlorination or repairing the well does not rectify the problem, then continuous chlorination, or distillation is suggested.
The Minnesota Department of Health recommends boiling as a temporary measure until you have a new sanitary water supply.
